She is given the made up title of Progenna, because she can't be in line for the throne and therefore, can't be a Princess. All her life, she is reminded that she isn't quite good enough. When her father decides she is to marry Pir Leo Valentine, an eighty-four year old man with a scar across his face that took his eye and only one hand, she runs away from the palace.

Orlando of Talla is a pig farmer and former soldier who served the King until he watched his Sovereign burn an entire harbor town rather than lose a battle. Now he tries to live a quiet life while leading a band a rebels who steal from the nobility to bring prisoners home from that war.

Orlando is also the bastard son of a nobleman, and therefore, he has a Sensitivity, one of Blood that allows him to feel the Sensitivities of others.

He finds the injured Progenna in the forest and immediately realizes that the stories about Mariana aren't true. Rather than being an Insensitive, Mariana may be the most powerful Sensitive in Valborough.

Author:

Nancy S. Brandt is a stay-at-home mother of two children, a daughter, 25, who is an ap-pointment's clerk at an orthopedic clinic and an editor and book reviewer; and a son, 12, who studies karate, and wants to be either an historian or an artist.  Nancy's husband, Ste-ven, is also an author and an adjunct professor of computer science at Louisiana State Uni-versity.

In about sixth grade, an English teacher gave an assignment to write a descriptive essay. Nancy's was all about a wonderful cave filled with diamonds, emeralds and other precious gems. From that experience, she walked into every English class hoping to get to write some-thing, and she learned three things:

            1. The difference between stalactite and stalagmite,

            2. That fantasy was probably the genre she should concentrate on, and

            3. Never end a story with "It was all a dream."

Nancy is a kidney transplant recipient (her husband was her living donor), a thyroid cancer survivor, and an Army veteran. She is currently working on the sequel to Pigsty Princess.

Chapter One

Progenna Mariana, fourth child of Queen Alexandria and King Jonathan of Valborough, watched the couples twirling around the dance floor. Beneath their feet, colored mosaics representing the eight magical elements danced as well, the patterns changing in time with the music.

The annual ball in celebration of the Queen’s birthday was in full swing.

Mariana watched in delight as her brother, Cognate Prince Ramone, Heir Presumptive, danced with his wife, who would be delivering their first child within the next month. The white sash draped from Grand Sahdess Victoria’s right shoulder to her left hip indicated Air Sensitivity and explained how she could be so light on her feet even with such an advanced pregnancy.

Mariana idly ran her fingertips along the fold of her own black satin sash, narrower than any the rest of the royal family wore. Traditionally, black was for children whose Sensitivities haven’t manifested yet, or the rare Insensitive Commoner invited to royal celebrations.

The color of her sash shouldn’t have bothered her anymore. Everyone in the kingdom knew Mariana had no Sensitivities. In fact, even her title, “Progenna,” had been created especially for her. The title identified her as a daughter of the King and Queen, but also made it clear she had no magical abilities and, therefore, no place in the line of succession. She was, officially, a royal nobody.

The music from the quartet of stringed instruments stopped, and the couples paired up in two lines in the center of the floor for the next dance, a lively reel.

Mariana moved along the tapestry-covered walls toward the three sets of double doors that led to the balcony.

She had to find Darius, son and Heir Presumptive of Clarence, the Margrave of Sasoin. As Mariana surveyed the dance floor, she couldn’t see Darius, who was known as the Rieravo of Sasoin, a title he inherited when his father’s landholdings increased and the older man was given the higher title.

As one of the few still-unmarried Heir Presumptives of a high-ranking noble in the court, Darius had a partner for every dance of the evening. Mariana assumed he had to be out on the balcony getting some fresh air after all the dancing he’d done.

She and Darius had been an unofficial couple for some time now, and one more dance would make it official. Then, her father couldn’t keep them from announcing their intent to wed. After all, a third dance at such an event was practically an engagement announcement all by itself.

As she passed by, guests bowed their heads and muttered greetings. However, she ignored them all, as she was only interested in finding Darius.

Suddenly, she was halted by a black wooden cane thrust horizontally in front of her. Its bearer was a short bald man with one eye, who smiled so wide at her his yellow chipped teeth were visible.

“Pir Leo,” Mariana said, making a small curtsy of respect to the Sahdeer of Valentine, advisor to the King. “How nice to see you this evening.”

“My dear Progenna Mariana, I have been hoping to dance with you.” He grabbed her gloved hand and kissed it. As always, he lingered longer than was appropriate before releasing her. Marianna suppressed a shudder.

Pir Leo had been a figure in her life since she was a child. Because he was an expert in diplomacy and foreign relations, he was a frequent visitor to the palace and even at family gatherings. He had always frightened her.

Chapter One

Melina took a sip of her coffee and gazed out at the lightly falling snow. Mesmerized by its delicate beauty, she didn't even notice when someone took a seat in the chair across the table from her.
"How’d I know you'd be sitting at a window seat?" the voice mused.
Her eyes widened in excitement as she turned and smiled at the newcomer. There sat Lee, bundled up in his black wool coat, a gray and black plaid scarf wrapped loosely around his neck, his tawny hair messed about from the wind. She leaned over and gave him a soft kiss, a slight blush reddening her cheeks. They had been together for almost three months now, but she still got flushed and giddy around him.
She turned back to look out the window again. "It's breathtaking, isn't it?"
Lee chuckled. "Yeah, snow's pretty to watch. But if you know you have to drive in it later, it loses some of its luster."
"That's why I walked here," Melina said as she pointed down at her tall, black snow boots.
He smiled at her. "I'm happy to see your Christmas gift is being put to good use."
"These put my old pair to shame. They're much warmer. I can go for a lot more walks now." Melina grinned then returned her gaze to the snow. "I'm trying to catch sight of my first snowflake. It's snowed six times this month already, and I still haven't seen one."
"I'm sure you'll have plenty of opportunities, seeing how it's only the third week of January and how much you love to watch snow." He let out another chuckle just as Nina, the owner of the café, showed up with his coffee.
She was a plump, older woman with short, spiky white hair and always had a smile on her face. "Good morning, Lee." She beamed at him as she set the steaming coffee mug down on the table. "I brought you your usual."
"Thanks, Nina," he said and then took a sip of his drink.
"You're welcome, sweetheart. You two let me know if you need anything else." She gave them both a quick wave then made her way back to the front.
Lee looked back over at Melina. "I'm sorry I'm a bit late. I know you said you wanted to get out of here before the morning crowd arrived."
"It's all right," she said, shaking her head. "We still have about twenty minutes or so before the usual rush shows up."
He held her gaze, his light brown eyes full of concern.
Melina averted her eyes down to her coffee mug. She didn't want him to pick up on her anxiety, but she must've been doing a lousy job of hiding it, because she could still feel him staring at her.
"I'm okay," she said as she lifted her eyes back up to meet his. "I'm just—" Melina's voice cut off as she suddenly let out a short cry. Her hand shot up to her head as her face contorted in pain.
"What is it? What's wrong?" He jumped up from his chair and knelt down beside her.
She rubbed at her aching forehead as she struggled to speak. "Too many… people. Too many… thoughts. My head… it feels like it's… going to explode."
Lee furrowed his brows as he stood up from his knees and glanced around the room. "There aren't even ten other people in here."
A low groan escaped her. "It feels like a hundred." She continued to massage her temple when suddenly the pain intensified. "Ahh!” she screamed as she raised her other hand up to her temple. “My head feels like it's on fire now."
He quickly threw some money onto the table then slid his arm around Melina. "Come on. Let's get you out of here." He hoisted her up from her chair, and let his arm slip up underneath hers.
"It burns! It burns!" she cried as she squinted her eyes shut. "What is going on?"
"We're almost out of here. Hang on." There was a side exit a few steps away from them, and Lee led her out through the door as discreetly as he could. Melina hated not saying good-bye to Nina, but if she saw her in this state, she would become overly concerned and cause unnecessary stress.
They stepped outside and the windswept snow caused her to turn her face into Lee's shoulder. When they were several feet away from the café, she finally lifted her head and said, "I need to stop for a minute." She released her arm from around his neck but continued to lean on him.
"Okay," he said, keeping his arm wrapped snugly around her. "I'm parked just up at the end of the block. Do you think you can make it there?"
She nodded and slid her arm up around his neck again. When they had finally reached his SUV, he helped to ease her down into the passenger seat. He shut the door for her then ran around and climbed into the driver's seat.
"What happened in there?" he asked as he started the engine and turned on the heat.

Excerpt:

Right after Mother disappeared, my father started beating me a lot, and the day I met the Goddess Ardwinna, he was at it again. The first couple of times he whipped me with his belt after Mother disappeared in one of the dark spells Morrigan brings on our land, I acted like I was in pain. After that I just gave him dirty looks.

"Didn’t hurt," I said when he had finished on that particular day — though it did a little. He raised the belt threateningly. "Go on," I urged. "Hit me all you want. I’m sure Mother would be happy to see you beating her only daughter."

When I spoke of Mother, Father always backed off. He turned and went to the kitchen, the belt dragging on the floor. I heard him pour himself what had to be a cup of whisky, which he usually drank when he was in this kind of mood.

It was hard when she disappeared. I spent time in church, prostrate before the altar, weeping and pleading. I told God I would do anything if He would return Mother to us. I promised I would enter a convent. Whatever He asked of me, I would do if He would return her. Only silence came from heaven — silence and Father’s drinking. Our priest told me to be patient. Months passed. Finally, I went out one snowy morning and walked to Ardwinna’s bower. This called for caution. Our people worshipped Ardwinna, the goddess of the wood, of hunting, and of virginity before our province became Christian. Some still worshipped her, though secretly.

I came to the sacred place beside a stream where two white birch trees towered to the sky. The bare trees creaked in the wind. The stream flowed in the middle, though it had iced at the edges. I walked up and brushed the snow from the two stones, took off my shoes, placed my feet on the two smooth, cold rocks, and reached out to touch the cold, peeling white of the trees.

In the perfect silence of winter — in the cold and purity of blue sky — I asked the goddess to help me. Even though my feet burned with cold, I stood there a long time. Did I feel the goddess near? There is no way to know if we feel such things or if they are simply our own hearts full of emotion making us feel what we hope for. After a while I returned. Ardwinna did not answer my prayer. I had given up on divine intervention to bring Mother back to us.

That had been in winter. Spring came and headed into summer, and still we knew nothing of Mother. We had no idea where she had gone nor whether she was alive or dead.

After Father had beaten me, Miranda came into the room. She brought a glass of light wine from the cellar. Her grey eyes were sad. I sat down, took a sip, and told her to climb into my lap. She was really too big to be sitting in my lap. At eight years, she was a tall, sturdy maiden. Tender-hearted and sensitive, it always hurt her to see Father give me threshing. She sat on my legs and snuggled against me. I put my arms around her.

"Why is Grandfather always beating you?" she asked.

"He doesn’t do it a lot. It just seems a lot, because it’s so upsetting when it happens. He’s full of sorrow about Mother." I kissed her and stroked her hair. "Don’t fret, Miranda. Time will heal him."

"Will you sing me a song?" Miranda asked.

I got my lute and did a funny song for her. She laughed. We went outside, played tag, and tossed pine cones into a bucket until she got tired of her favorite game.

"I’ve got to do my chores," she said. I helped her feed our goats. She went off to weed the herb garden. I went to my room, washed, and changed into fresh clothing. My lesson was scheduled for that day.

I put my lute in its carrying bag. Roxanne, my servant girl, and Jacques, one of the burly, tough male servants, accompanied me. We were going to the home of Leonel, my teacher, who lived at the edge of the Wood of Ardwinna. In the old days, it was sacred to her.

Chapter One

Act of Contrition – Poppy

The tiny box is warm and comforting. I wait for him to slide the partition open.

“Who is the patron saint of hopeless cases?” I blurt out, completely ignoring protocol.

“That’s an odd question. Why do you want to know?” He asks, interest piqued.

“I’m thinking of applying for sainthood. If that cause isn’t already taken.”

His big, booming, belly laugh shakes the flimsy mesh partition separating us. “Tell me what you have to confess.”

My eyes start to water. I hate admitting when I’m wrong. Which is why I haven't been to confession in ages. That’s not exactly why.

“I’ve fallen in love, Father,” I say, picking at the fraying fabric screen.

“There is nothing sinful about that. Go on.”

“He’s married. I told him I couldn’t see him anymore, but we kissed, made out actually. I guess if I’m going for total honesty here, we did a whole lot more than just make out. Now I just feel hopelessly lost.”

He’s silent for a moment. I’m not worried. Surely, he's heard worse over his years in the confessional, right? I can feel a hot, prickly blush creeping up my neck.

“Love is one of God’s greatest gifts. In fact, it is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Your love for this man, though displaced, is not sinful, I feel. However, engaging in physical expressions of that love, on the other hand, is.” He pauses, probably to let the full weight of my actions sink in, or maybe he wants the dirty details. Either way I dissolve into the ugly cry. “Don’t cry. This is not a place of sorrow, but forgiveness. Hush, hush,” he says.

“I do feel sorrow, Father. This man, this wonderful man is woven into my sorrow by so many threads. I can’t separate him from them, or I’ll unravel,” I say, sniffling.

“You are not comprised of sorrow. Our Father did not make you to dwell in unhappiness.”

I know he’s right, but all I feel inside of me is sorrow. It's as if I’m a one-sided coin eternally landing face down.

“Now,” he continues a little hesitantly, waiting for me to compose myself. I’m probably scaring away the other confessors waiting outside. “No one is perfect, except our Lord.” He pauses. “How long ago was this?”

“A few months, more like three months,” I say a little wistfully, remembering the last time Michael and I were together. When the priest speaks again, my mind is far away. I barely register his question.

“Why did you wait so long to confess?”

“Honestly?”

“That is usually best,” he replies dryly.

“I wasn’t sorry...for any of it.”

“Have you any plans to see this man again?”

“No! I haven't even returned any of his calls, and there have been a few that were really difficult to ignore, let me tell you.”

“That’s good, about not calling, I mean.”

“Do I get extra credit for that?” I ask hopefully. He doesn’t answer, just chuckles. I assume that’s a no.

“I have an important question to ask you Poppy. Do you want to be a path of destruction for this man?”

The gravity of his words settle around my shoulders like heavy chains. Path of destruction? I shake my head, unable to find the words, unable to contemplate being anything but a source of joy and happiness for him.

“If you truly love this man, as you say you do, you’ll only want what is best for him. What is that?” he asks, then waits patiently.

Chapter One

Teague Willam watched Persephone the First. She huddled in the corner of the small room that made up her "cell", curled into a ball as she hugged herself. With one hand, she held her head, as if in some kind of pain. Tears streamed down her face.

"Keep it together. You have to keep it together," she whispered to herself.

He wanted to offer her words of comfort, but in the dream world, all he could do was observe and take note of everything happening around him. As a Fate, Teague often dreamed about different events in vivid detail. Most of them were of the past — that was his specialty. Each Fate had a time frame they saw the most. His father Anj saw the present most often but was known to have visions of all three time frames: past, present, and future. However, Teague's abilities were nowhere near as strong , even though his visions were much more detailed than anything his father experienced. The few times they'd talked about it, Anj described his dreams as being short and to the point but not necessarily specific.

While Teague may have been dreaming about the past, it was also his present — confusing, but that was how time travel worked. He'd been sent to the past to right a terrible wrong. Whatever was happening to Persephone was technically occurring in the time frame his body was presently in. Because he was from the future, the incident represented his past. He wasn't about to complain. The more information he had, the better. He needed all the help he could get to complete his quest.

Teague couldn't provide Persephone with any direct comfort, but maybe in some small way, she could sense his presence. Magic had a way of making itself known even if no one could see it at work. If anything, it made him feel better inside.

"You're not alone," Teague said. "I won't leave you if I don't have to." He sat next to her, wanting to touch her but unable to do so.

When Persephone lifted her gaze, she did so and looked directly at him. Though, the young woman he saw wasn't Persephone but Cheyenne Loveless, the teenage girl Persephone had possessed. The whole possession thing confused Teague. There were a lot of pieces he was still trying to put together. From what he did understand, Cheyenne was the chosen vessel for Persephone to be reincarnated into and a long lost descendant of the original deity. Persephone's true love, Hades the First, was reincarnated into a teenage boy named Denver Collins. Together, they would fulfill an ancient prophecy that was supposed to bring back power to the Divine Council, the ancient political circle of the gods and goddesses who controlled the laws of all magical beings.

Poor Cheyenne. There was so much sadness in her gaze, and confusion. Teague felt sorry for her. She didn't always make the best decisions, but she also wasn't always in control of her life. The part of him that wanted to hate her for all of the pain she'd caused his family, got shot down by the compassion he held for her in his heart. Seeing her sad, fear-filled eyes, he realized she was nothing more than a girl and no different than himself. Because even though he was a teenager, there were days when he felt like a small child — and the world was a big place for him to get lost in. She was the same, a pawn being used for a greater scheme that she didn't understand. The world of magic was foreign to her — a fact he hadn't realized until that moment.

Footsteps could be heard from outside of the room. Cheyenne was still in control of her body, and she gazed at the door with a whimper. "He's coming. Stay strong."

There was a jingling of keys in a lock. The door opened and in walked the dark angel Lucien. Teague had seen him a few times before in other dreams. He could never forget what the creature looked like. On first appearances, he was just like any other normal young man. Lucien could have passed for being around twenty years old and was the typical tall, dark, and handsome thing that supposedly made girls swoon.

On his back was a pair of large, blood-red, wings speckled with flecks of silver that brought out his cold, lifeless, steel-gray eyes. First encounters with him suggested he was innocent enough, that he meant well. But the demon had a manipulative tongue and an evil heart. Nothing he said could be trusted. He didn't flat-out lie, but in every deal he proposed and in every truth he spoke, there was also a hidden loophole present, and he had no qualms with using it for his advantage. Or at least that was what Teague had observed over his many visions of the monster.

Chapter One

A hush blanketed the room. The people stood in silence, which had never happened before. Usually they were as chatty as a flock of seagulls. She glanced around the room, thoroughly confused. Laidan had grown accustomed to their endless critiques and ridicule, so this reaction surprised her.

“What, what’s wrong?” Laidan asked in a small voice. Her hair and makeup team only smiled.

The fluttering in her chest multiplied and her palms became moist as she wove her fingers around each other. Laidan thought she had overcome the nerves. She also thought it strange the different levels of nervousness she could experience in one single night.

Known to her fans as Lady Laidan, the past couple of months left her trailing in the whirlwind wake of airports, stadiums, and screaming fans. But this year felt different. First of all, the venues were much larger, the stage set now consisted of fireworks, and of course the number of fans had multiplied. Now to think — she awaited the stage for the coveted spot of singing for the White House Christmas program. This both terrified and excited the world’s newest rising star. She gazed around the dressing room again, awaiting an answer.

Stunning! Glorious! I have never been more proud — ever.” Tom, her fashion designer, had never been one to dish out compliments. In fact, there had always been an unsaid war between the two of them about her image. Relief settled as she felt color return to her face.

“Really, Laidan, I hope now you won’t refuse to dress this way more often. You should, you know. Embrace your inner diva. The fans would love it!”

She laughed internally at the thought of being a diva, but only smiled. The last thing she wanted to be was a dress up doll. It had always been about the music. That’s what fueled her desire for being in this crazy industry. Most others, it seemed, loved the pageantry of it all. But not her, she loved the songwriting, the itchy fingers as she picked through the chords on her guitar, then seeing how it all came together during her concerts. It was the process, not the end result that made her happy.

She could feel the weight of her gown as folds of it fell around her ankles. Swirling snowflakes stitched with crystals danced on the white silk. She unhitched her hands and looked down at her jewelry. “Frost and icicles” Tom had called it when he pitched the idea to her, rather timidly back then. Now, she didn’t doubt his genius. Diamond rings sparkled on her fingers in the shape of intricate snowflakes.

“So this is what it feels like to be a bride, I guess,” she finally said, feeling the huge smile on her face.

Tom laughed flamboyantly. “Better. Much better. More like a Snow Queen.” He placed his hands around her arms. “Turn around, just look at yourself.”

The vast fabric of her skirt made it hard to make sudden movements, so she slowly turned around. Her breath caught as she noticed her hair. How had they done that? She was known for her long dark hair and her hairstyles were often the cover of magazines, but tonight, Tom had outdone himself.

“Maybe now you will be more excited about the doll industry contacting you about fashioning a doll after you.” Tom turned to the others and squealed in delight. “Can you just imagine!”

Laidan rolled her eyes at their dramatics as they whispered with excitement to each other. To be polite, she smiled, which had come easily because, despite the secret panic attacks that overcame her on stage, she had never been so happy. Reaching up to touch the dark mass of her updo, her fingers skimmed across the crystal and diamond snowflakes, which seemed magically attached in her hair. Her fingers followed her neckline down to the diamonds and crystals that were shaped into delicate patterns and looked as if they had frozen as they landed on her chest.
