RELEASE DAY: Nancy S. Brandt "Pigsty Princess"

Blurb:

In a country where Elemental Sensitivities determine a person's place in society, Mariana, fourth child of King Jonathan and Queen Alexandria, was born an Insensitive. She is given the made up title of Progenna, because she can't be in line for the throne and therefore, can't be a Princess. All her life, she is reminded that she isn't quite good enough. When her father decides she is to marry Pir Leo Valentine, an eighty-four year old man with a scar across his face that took his eye and only one hand, she runs away from the palace.

Orlando of Talla is a pig farmer and former soldier who served the King until he watched his Sovereign burn an entire harbor town rather than lose a battle. Now he tries to live a quiet life while leading a band a rebels who steal from the nobility to bring prisoners home from that war.

Orlando is also the bastard son of a nobleman, and therefore, he has a Sensitivity, one of Blood that allows him to feel the Sensitivities of others.

He finds the injured Progenna in the forest and immediately realizes that the stories about Mariana aren't true. Rather than being an Insensitive, Mariana may be the most powerful Sensitive in Valborough.

Author:

Nancy S. Brandt is a stay-at-home mother of two children, a daughter, 25, who is an ap-pointment's clerk at an orthopedic clinic and an editor and book reviewer; and a son, 12, who studies karate, and wants to be either an historian or an artist.  Nancy's husband, Ste-ven, is also an author and an adjunct professor of computer science at Louisiana State Uni-versity.

In about sixth grade, an English teacher gave an assignment to write a descriptive essay. Nancy's was all about a wonderful cave filled with diamonds, emeralds and other precious gems. From that experience, she walked into every English class hoping to get to write some-thing, and she learned three things:

            1. The difference between stalactite and stalagmite,

            2. That fantasy was probably the genre she should concentrate on, and

            3. Never end a story with "It was all a dream."

Nancy is a kidney transplant recipient (her husband was her living donor), a thyroid cancer survivor, and an Army veteran. She is currently working on the sequel to Pigsty Princess.

Chapter One

Progenna Mariana, fourth child of Queen Alexandria and King Jonathan of Valborough, watched the couples twirling around the dance floor. Beneath their feet, colored mosaics representing the eight magical elements danced as well, the patterns changing in time with the music.

The annual ball in celebration of the Queen’s birthday was in full swing.

Mariana watched in delight as her brother, Cognate Prince Ramone, Heir Presumptive, danced with his wife, who would be delivering their first child within the next month. The white sash draped from Grand Sahdess Victoria’s right shoulder to her left hip indicated Air Sensitivity and explained how she could be so light on her feet even with such an advanced pregnancy.

Mariana idly ran her fingertips along the fold of her own black satin sash, narrower than any the rest of the royal family wore. Traditionally, black was for children whose Sensitivities haven’t manifested yet, or the rare Insensitive Commoner invited to royal celebrations.

The color of her sash shouldn’t have bothered her anymore. Everyone in the kingdom knew Mariana had no Sensitivities. In fact, even her title, “Progenna,” had been created especially for her. The title identified her as a daughter of the King and Queen, but also made it clear she had no magical abilities and, therefore, no place in the line of succession. She was, officially, a royal nobody.

The music from the quartet of stringed instruments stopped, and the couples paired up in two lines in the center of the floor for the next dance, a lively reel.

Mariana moved along the tapestry-covered walls toward the three sets of double doors that led to the balcony.

She had to find Darius, son and Heir Presumptive of Clarence, the Margrave of Sasoin. As Mariana surveyed the dance floor, she couldn’t see Darius, who was known as the Rieravo of Sasoin, a title he inherited when his father’s landholdings increased and the older man was given the higher title.

As one of the few still-unmarried Heir Presumptives of a high-ranking noble in the court, Darius had a partner for every dance of the evening. Mariana assumed he had to be out on the balcony getting some fresh air after all the dancing he’d done.

She and Darius had been an unofficial couple for some time now, and one more dance would make it official. Then, her father couldn’t keep them from announcing their intent to wed. After all, a third dance at such an event was practically an engagement announcement all by itself.

As she passed by, guests bowed their heads and muttered greetings. However, she ignored them all, as she was only interested in finding Darius.

Suddenly, she was halted by a black wooden cane thrust horizontally in front of her. Its bearer was a short bald man with one eye, who smiled so wide at her his yellow chipped teeth were visible.

“Pir Leo,” Mariana said, making a small curtsy of respect to the Sahdeer of Valentine, advisor to the King. “How nice to see you this evening.”

“My dear Progenna Mariana, I have been hoping to dance with you.” He grabbed her gloved hand and kissed it. As always, he lingered longer than was appropriate before releasing her. Marianna suppressed a shudder.

Pir Leo had been a figure in her life since she was a child. Because he was an expert in diplomacy and foreign relations, he was a frequent visitor to the palace and even at family gatherings. He had always frightened her.

Chapter One

Melina took a sip of her coffee and gazed out at the lightly falling snow. Mesmerized by its delicate beauty, she didn't even notice when someone took a seat in the chair across the table from her.
"How’d I know you'd be sitting at a window seat?" the voice mused.
Her eyes widened in excitement as she turned and smiled at the newcomer. There sat Lee, bundled up in his black wool coat, a gray and black plaid scarf wrapped loosely around his neck, his tawny hair messed about from the wind. She leaned over and gave him a soft kiss, a slight blush reddening her cheeks. They had been together for almost three months now, but she still got flushed and giddy around him.
She turned back to look out the window again. "It's breathtaking, isn't it?"
Lee chuckled. "Yeah, snow's pretty to watch. But if you know you have to drive in it later, it loses some of its luster."
"That's why I walked here," Melina said as she pointed down at her tall, black snow boots.
He smiled at her. "I'm happy to see your Christmas gift is being put to good use."
"These put my old pair to shame. They're much warmer. I can go for a lot more walks now." Melina grinned then returned her gaze to the snow. "I'm trying to catch sight of my first snowflake. It's snowed six times this month already, and I still haven't seen one."
"I'm sure you'll have plenty of opportunities, seeing how it's only the third week of January and how much you love to watch snow." He let out another chuckle just as Nina, the owner of the café, showed up with his coffee.
She was a plump, older woman with short, spiky white hair and always had a smile on her face. "Good morning, Lee." She beamed at him as she set the steaming coffee mug down on the table. "I brought you your usual."
"Thanks, Nina," he said and then took a sip of his drink.
"You're welcome, sweetheart. You two let me know if you need anything else." She gave them both a quick wave then made her way back to the front.
Lee looked back over at Melina. "I'm sorry I'm a bit late. I know you said you wanted to get out of here before the morning crowd arrived."
"It's all right," she said, shaking her head. "We still have about twenty minutes or so before the usual rush shows up."
He held her gaze, his light brown eyes full of concern.
Melina averted her eyes down to her coffee mug. She didn't want him to pick up on her anxiety, but she must've been doing a lousy job of hiding it, because she could still feel him staring at her.
"I'm okay," she said as she lifted her eyes back up to meet his. "I'm just—" Melina's voice cut off as she suddenly let out a short cry. Her hand shot up to her head as her face contorted in pain.
"What is it? What's wrong?" He jumped up from his chair and knelt down beside her.
She rubbed at her aching forehead as she struggled to speak. "Too many… people. Too many… thoughts. My head… it feels like it's… going to explode."
Lee furrowed his brows as he stood up from his knees and glanced around the room. "There aren't even ten other people in here."
A low groan escaped her. "It feels like a hundred." She continued to massage her temple when suddenly the pain intensified. "Ahh!” she screamed as she raised her other hand up to her temple. “My head feels like it's on fire now."
He quickly threw some money onto the table then slid his arm around Melina. "Come on. Let's get you out of here." He hoisted her up from her chair, and let his arm slip up underneath hers.
"It burns! It burns!" she cried as she squinted her eyes shut. "What is going on?"
"We're almost out of here. Hang on." There was a side exit a few steps away from them, and Lee led her out through the door as discreetly as he could. Melina hated not saying good-bye to Nina, but if she saw her in this state, she would become overly concerned and cause unnecessary stress.
They stepped outside and the windswept snow caused her to turn her face into Lee's shoulder. When they were several feet away from the café, she finally lifted her head and said, "I need to stop for a minute." She released her arm from around his neck but continued to lean on him.
"Okay," he said, keeping his arm wrapped snugly around her. "I'm parked just up at the end of the block. Do you think you can make it there?"
She nodded and slid her arm up around his neck again. When they had finally reached his SUV, he helped to ease her down into the passenger seat. He shut the door for her then ran around and climbed into the driver's seat.
"What happened in there?" he asked as he started the engine and turned on the heat.

Chapter One

“Mom, you know Mississippi will always be my home. It’s time for me to strike out on my own. Make a life for myself.” Tansy Adams hugged her mother, Eva. She wiped the tears from Eva’s face.

“I just don’t like you going all the way to Texas. That’s a long way off.” Eva’s voice cracked as she tried to talk.

“I know. I can always call and besides, it’s a great opportunity for me.” Tansy’s heart picked up a beat.

“You better get going. Jema is a bit antsy.” Eva pointed to the horse trailer hooked to the back of Tansy’s pickup. The five-year-old mare thumped her hoof on the wooden floor as if to back up Eva’s words.

Tansy slid in the driver side and pulled down the drive of the old plantation house she had lived in all her life.

After two days of travel the subtropical climate transitioned to the arid, dust-blown great plains of the northwest Texas Panhandle. Each state Tansy passed through seemed just as beautiful in its own way. She soaked it all in. Tansy and Jema rolled into the small town.

“Millstone, Texas. Population 12,356. We made it, Jema.” Tansy said out loud, even though she knew the horse couldn’t hear her. Her heart picked up a beat. Light, butterfly-type movements fluttered in her stomach.

Tansy drove straight for the Grow ‘em feed yard to meet with Benny Whipple and the cowboy boss. They met her in the parking lot.

She stretched as her feet touched the ground. An older man rushed toward her.

“Benny Whipple. You must be Tansy Adams.” The old man thrust his hand out to her. She smiled and took his pudgy hand in hers. “Get your horse and we’ll get her settled in while we talk.” Benny stood beside the trailer and waited for Tansy to unload Jema. The cowboy boss leaned casually against a nearby pipe fence with his feet crossed at the ankles.

Benny owned the feed yard. His blue eyes were clear and sparkled with a hint of amusement. Although his hair was gray, the fifty-eight year old man seemed to be in better shape than most forty year olds Tansy knew. And he was better looking than they were to boot. He had a pleasant, calm air about him that made Tansy relax.

Jema backed out of the trailer. Tansy caught the lead rope. She retrieved her tack and tossed the saddle blanket and saddle on the mare's back. Jema didn’t even flinch. Tansy folded the bridle across her elbow and followed Benny through the gate he rushed ahead to open. Jema’s ears perked up and she gazed toward a feed bunk.

“There’s your shed to keep your tack and feed in. We expect you to clean your own shed and stall. As calm as your horse is, I get the feeling you’ve put in a lot of hours horseback. It’s your responsibility to keep your tack in good working order. Here’s a lock and key for the door. We like to think no one will tamper with your equipment, but the cowboys are always up for a good, old-fashioned rodeo. They don’t mean any harm even if they instigate it themselves.”

“I know cowboys are just overgrown kids at heart. As soon as Jema, my mare, rest up from the trip, I plan on getting her accustomed to her new surroundings. If that’s ok.” Tansy unloaded her saddle and blanket from the horse's back and carried them into the shed.

Benny thumbed over his shoulder. “This here’s Gulch. He’s the cattle manager and he’s in charge of all the pen riders. If you have gripes about the cowboys, I want to hear about it. If you got questions about the job, go to him.”

CHAPTER ONE

Devon stood up to her boot tops in snow as she breathed in the crisp, winter air. The first sunrise of the New Year peeked between the houses and spilled onto the street. The sturdy branches of the old maples bowed to the weight of the fresh snow. Parked cars and drawn curtains let her know most of the neighbors must be sleeping in from their late-night revelry. Now the only sound to break the peaceful silence came from the snow plows a few streets over and old Mr. Taylor’s Chihuahua barking ferociously at Bubby from his living room window. A tug on the leash signaled that Bubby had finished his business and was ready to move on.

“Just a minute, boy. I’ve got to pick up your mess.” Devon bent down and nimbly thrust her hand into the bag while Bubby strained at the end of his lead. “Hold on, my boots don’t have traction control,” she told him as he lunged playfully into the fresh powder. She dumped the bag into the trash and they continued their walk around the small park.

Devon pulled on the leash. “C’mon, Bub. We’ve got to get home. Daddy’s frying bacon.” Bubby’s ears perked up at the mention of “bacon” and their pace quickened toward the house.

“Hi Daddy,” Devon said, closing the door behind her. She unsnapped Bubby’s leash, slipped off her boots and parka, and walked into the kitchen. “Happy New Year!” She kissed her father on the cheek and opened the dog food container. Hearing the dry kibble being poured into his bowl, Bubby raced across the room and began to eat.

“He sure loves his food,” Charles Murphy observed. “Don’t think I could eat the same bland stuff everyday. I guess if I did, I’d lose some of this belly.” He pointed to his small pot of a stomach.

“Unless you ate only barbeque potato chips and crème-filled sponge cake rolls.”

“Okay, you got me. Tell you what, I’ll make that my New Year’s resolution. I, Charles Murphy, solemnly promise that starting tomorrow, I will eat only bran flakes and skim milk for breakfast. And I will become a health food nut just like my crazy daughter.”

Devon raised an eyebrow at him while he piled several strips of bacon onto his plate. A mound of scrambled eggs and overly buttered toast lay next to the bacon strips. His first fib of the New Year; he had no intention of following through with the resolution. She carried her plate of eggs and whole-wheat toast to the table. Charles followed with another plate of greasy hash browns.

“You’re full of malarkey! You know you can’t give up your pot roasts and pork sausages, which, by the way, are not helping your blood pressure. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you eat fish, unless it was coated and deep fried.”

“And you never will! Fish is meant to be dunked in batter and fried in as much grease as possible.” Charles sat down at the table and dug his spoon into the potatoes. “That kind of food will put meat on your bones.”

“I know, I know. You’ve been telling me that since I could chew. And don’t give Bubby any bacon. You’ll make him fat!” The guilty look on Charles’s face let her know he’d already dropped a piece on the floor for the dog.

“Fat! The way you run that dog in the park, he could qualify for the Kentucky Derby!”

They laughed, then ate in companionable silence. Devon glanced over at her father. His white hair showed no yellow tinge as happens to some seniors; it was white as a new, starched napkin. His bushy eyebrows matched and caused his cobalt blue eyes to sparkle even more. Though not a tall man, his personality made him seem larger than life. He always flirted with words and could make people laugh, no matter how depressing the circumstances might be. And for not being born in Ireland, he exuded his Irish heritage in every way, especially in his stubbornness.
Fifteen minutes later, Charles leaned back in his chair. “Now that was one of the best meals I ever ate!”

Chapter One

OASTOMIN

I hate my father...most of the time. I know a prince should never utter those words to another living, breathing soul, but it’s the truth.

My ears often bleed at the sound of his imperious voice because his tormenting commands swim in my head constantly. Every waking hour, he tells me how to act, what to say, and how to say it. When I get a moment alone, I don’t even recognize the sound of my own thoughts.

If I were an ordinary teenager, I could put in my digital music system earbuds and zone out to American music imports like Imagine Dragons or Bruno Mars, but I’m far from ordinary. See, even when I was in my mother’s womb, my father was determined to make me the splendid symbol of a modern monarchy.

So no one knows I daydream about what it would be like to tie him to a chair, gag his mouth, and hold his head back while I pour water up his perfect royal nose. The same nose he enjoys declaring he gifted to me. Some part of me always believes, in order to remedy my agony, he needs to feel some of my suffocation.

What a detestable wicked thought, yes, I know, but thinking of milder therapies never eases my suffering. Locking him up and forcing him to hear his own voice forever parroting lectures is too wimpy. He would thrive on the physical pain he orders me to face every training day since I’ve reached the age of eighteen.

Sometimes I still can’t believe my own father tortures me every day at the crack of dawn, except on worship days, because he believes this training is part of my royal duty. It’s the fifth month of this ritual.

“Take the blow or avert it, Oastomin,” my father, King Natro, exclaims in irritation from the far corner of the arena. His instruction always makes me tense when I should relax and hesitate when I should strike.

He stands in front of his royal box seat scrutinizing me, dressed in a formfitting silver and burgundy sparring jacket and black trousers. His appearance is reminiscent of his former battle days and a bit different from American fashion. I guess you would call Jacmuiran fashion cutting-edge or ethereal.

The Jacmuiran crest is displayed on the left side of his jacket close to his heart. To most people, the only thing denoting his majestic rank is the ring on his hand, but for me, it’s his arrogant stance.

He always stands erect with his hand under his chin when he’s watching or thinking. He believes it’s the best way to display his ring and make his eyes appear more piercing, but I sense it’s his preeminent way to be perceived as intimidating and pompous.

My mother wants me to believe he wasn’t always so robotic, void of some emotion. He used to be carefree and more empathic, but becoming a ruler changed him. He’s more private now, cautious of the paparazzi and the stalking of glory seekers.

I kind of believe the power of the crown corrupted him, just as it does many kings, presidents, and emperors.

When a man gains power over others, power to force them to do his bidding when they don’t believe it’s right, a moral weakness will always develop within the person who exercises absolute power. It may take time for this flaw to become visible to the public, but their family members will see it first. And my everyday torture is a glaring indication of his unreliable moral compass.

“Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.” My father sounds terse, exasperated.

He is a dark, striking figure of a man, tall and majestic. When he ventures out of the castle’s walls to royal functions, children’s mouths drop open in awe because he seems larger than life. They wonder what it would be like to be his heir, to be so close to the power of the throne, but I’m telling you right now, the enchanted façade only masks hellish royal expectations.
