Kathy loves reading and writing even more. She homeschools her three kids, so in between unsuccessfully explaining the difference between subject and predicate or how to divide fractions, she enters an imaginary world of troubled and passionate characters whose stories take over the page. Kathy lives in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, where the summers are hot, the winters cool, and bugs thrive. Her first published novel, Wedding Gown Girl, came out in 2012 with Astraea Press. Chapter One

Christmas music filtered through the little chapel on the Coderica Passenger Liner. Rachelle ignored the loneliness evoked by the familiar songs. Memories of family Christmases wafted through her mind despite willing herself to forget. Not like she regretted her impulse to join the crew. She’d always wanted to visit Europe and had now seen it many times. The continent steeped in centuries of history still charmed her and wiped away the regret. Most of the time.
She’d begun her eighth cruise and second year on the ship. Her second Christmas away from her family. It was mostly during Christmas that she missed them.
The plush carpet of the chapel shone in the sparkly chandelier lighting. Pink padded walls looked garish yet romantic; gold trim embellished the benches, and silk flowers in an elaborate vase decorated the altar. Everything looked perfect and untouched. The cruise liner offered to facilitate weddings like a little Vegas chapel—the perfect cherry on top to a romantic cruise.
“I paid your way to get a top law degree, and you go on a ship to sign silly legal papers for weddings? You of all people, a runaway bride!” That was what she’d expected her father to say, but he hadn’t. Good thing her parents didn’t say much. Maybe they sensed how ashamed she felt of running away from Blake. And ashamed of how she’d treated Kienna, the wedding gown girl who’d told her not to marry her fiancé. Of course, they didn’t know how mean she’d been to Kienna. Only she knew. And Blake. And their friends.
Her cheeks turned hot with the memories. How could she have been such a witch? Her wounded pride had made her act vindictive and possessive, all for a man she didn’t even love. Kienna had helped her, not harmed her, even though Blake and she had ended up married six months later. She kept on telling that to herself, but really, how could she see Kienna as a friend and not a foe? The woman had gone behind her back and told Blake all her pre-wedding doubts. Yet, she’d done the right thing in the end. For all parties involved.
But she could never admit that to Kienna or even her family or friends. They didn’t need to know how mixed up she’d actually been.
She picked some lint off a chair and brushed the velvet with her hand so the texture would face one way. Argh! She was so bored. What to do?
She’d volunteered her services to the staff and guests all over the ship. Her office desk was full of legal documents—wills, inheritances, and property sales. Everything got done from her cramped little office on a ship. Who would have thought she could find so much legal work on a cruise liner?
This time of year, her work quietened down, though. No one wanted to think of life-changing decisions, only of Christmas with their families.
The door creaked oddly. She expected someone to walk in, but it merely swayed as if in a breeze. Curious, she walked to the carved wooden door and opened it. A male guest stepped back and gasped.
“Sorry,” he said.
“May I help you?”
He peered into the little room.
“You have a chapel on the ship? I was listening to the music, humming with the tunes. Are you a pastor?” His voice rumbled deep and had a certain tone that reminded her of something. What? The first note on her childhood xylophone?
Rachelle swallowed. “Not exactly. Do you need one?”
“No, just curious.”
“Okay.”
“May I come in? I like your music.”
“Of course. Thanks.” She provided her usual pleasant smile for potential customers.

Chapter One

Ali Micklejohn heaved a large two-seater couch in front of the door and sat down on the expansive three-seater to watch TV. Tonight was going to be a long night.

The wind blew in eerie echoes through the house she stayed in, knocking the loose window clasps like horror music with its squeaks, creaks, and sighs. The elements weren’t worth being scared of though. They were just sounds. No, this was South Africa, and even though she stayed in a fairly safe area, couldn’t someone be lurking in the shadows? Especially since she couldn’t lock the door. That was reason to be scared, she told herself, not all the strange creaking noises and “haunted” thoughts. The lock on the front door had given out on her this evening when she came home after struggling to turn the key for about an hour. The couch across the door provided her only way to feel a measure of safety.

Whines seared through the room; long, sad sounds that pierced into her gut. She shivered slightly and pulled her thin jacket closer to her chest.

Tonight was the 31st October. Halloween. And really, so what?

She’d never believed in Halloween, never celebrated it. Growing up in South Africa, Halloween had only taken off the last few years. Most of the older generation didn’t celebrate it at all. Some kids dressed up in outfits and went to parties. It hadn’t spread to the more serious generation yet.

Trick or treating wasn’t safe in a country where kids dare not walk the streets at night and knock on strangers’ doors. But decorations were all over the shops and even graced the school where Ali worked as a secretary. Spiders, witches’ hats, orange pumpkins, and zombie masks. Dark, sombre colours, which she actually liked in a perverse way. So, to a degree, she’d been immersed in the feeling of scariness, a feeling she normally found funny and wacky.

Not tonight for some reason.

She wasn’t the fearful type, never had been. Having survived being hijacked outside her parents’ gate, she’d learnt to appreciate every day, every moment, and she felt like a survivor. She was one.

The wooden front door creaked and groaned with the vicious spring winds. Why did spring always have to be so windy in Newcastle? She turned the TV up to drown out the sounds. She switched the channel to a comedy show and settled down with her large slab of hazelnut chocolate and a packet of crisps. Oh, the joys of living on her own for a change—she could have the whole bag to herself.

That’s why she’d decided to house-sit a few nights for a teacher at the school where she worked. And to get some time to think.

Besides, all her roommates were going out to a party with their boyfriends. Definitely not fun for the only single one left of the tight-knit group.

The TV made a fizz, and the light from its screen compressed into a small dot. All the lights in the house went out.

A power failure.

She sat frozen for a moment, unsure what to do next. This wasn’t her own home. Where did they keep candles and torches? At her place, she stored them in the kitchen drawer, and so did her parents in her childhood house. Wouldn’t that be the logical place? Blinking furiously, she hoped to find a light somewhere to guide her to the kitchen without bumping into something. Nothing. She couldn’t see a single thing. There was no moon tonight. Probably as overcast as it had been the whole miserable, rainy, windy afternoon. She spread out her hands in front of her and walked slowly, one awkward, terrifying step at a time.

In the darkness, the sounds were magnified. Wind whined like a strangled prisoner through every window, door crack, and ceiling board. Something tapped at one of the windows from the dining room. Tap…tap…tap. Probably just a branch from a nearby bush. It couldn’t be a ghost or a zombie, could it? Her quickened pulse didn’t believe any logical arguments tonight.

Describe yourself in three words:
Sensitive, creative and tenacious.

Tell us a little about your latest release:
Three Tiers for Win is a story of adventure, romance, and family passion that unfolds with the backdrop of the 2012 London Olympics. Elaine said she would never date an athlete as they’re too driven. That’s until she meets kind, yet intensely focused and ambitious South African Olympic swimmer, Winston Harper. He stands for everything she’d chosen not to go for. Win also has a bad family history which keeps him from opening his heart to her. When intense attraction and affection breaks through some of their barriers, family secrets and conflicts pull them apart again. Only Elaine’s support and Win’s brokenness can draw them back together, but will that be strong enough to wipe away the past?
The book was inspired by the London Olympics when one of South Africa's swimmers, Chad le Clos, won a gold medal and the news about a famous cyclist taking steroids.

What is your earliest memory?
I can't remember too far back. One memory that I will always cherish is from my mother who died when I was six. She loved fairies and would often talk to me about them. One day, she told me to climb up my favourite tree in the garden and look for a surprise there. I climbed up and found a little doll with a beautiful fairy outfit which she had sewn herself. I will never forget how special that moment was.

What would you consider the greatest moment in your life?
There are too many to count. Maybe some moments in prayer or with my husband or kids.

What’s the hardest thing in in life you’ve done?
Giving birth to three children, two of them in Zambia, a third-world country with little medical and other facilities. Also travelling with a newborn across three African countries, remote places, too.

What have you learned in life so far?
Wow, lots and lots. I think one of the biggest things I've learned is that God's love is unconditional and we don't have to do things to be loved and kept safe. His salvation is unconditional - not just when we turn to him but for the rest of our lives.
I've learned not to be a people pleaser although I think I still let it get to me at times, but I have learned the valuable lesson of saying no and putting my family first.

Everyone’s favourite question: if you could invite five people for dinner, who would it be?
Jesus Christ
My late mother
My late grandparents
The apostle Paul
A long-lost friend from school
