Fate destines them to be together forever, he’s sure of it, but something goes wrong and Raylyn disappears. She leaves a hole that only service can fill.

Chiapas, Mexico, is the perfect setting to forget her loss and work on her future. But when Jack reappears in her life, she worries her heart will break again. But after two years, she should be over him. Right? Do her new fears have a foundation or should she give in and allow herself to love him once more?

Prologue

Machines hummed, and the floor vibrated. Oxygen dribbled into the huge pump like water dripping off a gutter. Odors of rust and elderly people assaulted her senses.

Raylyn walked the lit aisle. Hospital beds lined both walls. Sporadically, a single wail rent the air. She twisted to face the patient, only to find them fast asleep.

Checking her list against a bed label, she stopped. Lt. Robert O’Malley lay unmoving. The pale pallor of his skin wasn’t a good sign. The lieutenant had been losing blood, but the doctors were unable to ascertain the cause.

She checked his vitals, wrote the numbers down, and moved on.

The next soldier was unnamed. For privacy reasons, his family had ordered the staff to call him Johnny. He’d lost both his legs and one arm in a military excursion.

Vitals checked and documented, she moved on. Tonight all the men slept. Her feet clicked against the tile floor, breaking the silence. She reached the nurses' station and stopped.

Where was everyone?

The computer screen blinked on. Bright green letters popped up one at a time.

H-E-L-P M-E!

She stepped back. Her hand hit a clipboard, and it clattered against the counter. She twirled.

Shocked, she blinked.

The patients were out of their beds and stumbling toward her. She opened her mouth to scream, but there was no sound.

They were coming for her…

****

Raylyn woke in a cold sweat. Tendrils of the dream clung to her consciousness. She ran her hand over her face and released a sigh. Outside, a streetlight buzzed. Dogs barked.

She kicked free of the covers tangled around her legs, rolled out of bed, and stumbled to the bathroom. She put on her glasses, and stared at herself in the mirror. “Morrison, get a hold of yourself. It was just a dream. A crazy whacked-out dream, but still a dream.”

As Raylyn splashed water on her face; she gasped and adjusted the faucet. She splashed her face again, toweled-dry, and headed back to bed. The bedside clock read 2:00 a.m. She plopped on the edge of the bed, but didn’t lie back. Sleep was over. If she closed her eyes, the dream would replay until she rose. Might as well not even try.

She gathered her clothes from the closet before heading to the shower.

Dressed in scrubs, with her hair pulled back in a ponytail, she padded into the kitchen. The one-bedroom apartment sported decent-sized rooms and a fabulous view. From the living area, she could just make out waves striking the sandy shore. She opened the window and listened to the violent sounds.

Instead of continuing to enjoy the pleasures of the room, Raylyn grabbed a bagel and gnawed on it as she exited the front door.

Nancy Bryant, the head nurse of the severely wounded ward at Grace Community Military Hospital, would not be surprised to see her arrive before her time off ended. The one-week-on, one-week-off schedule remained only a suggestion to Raylyn. She had clocked more overtime hours than any other nurse on their floor.

Upon arrival, the parking lot was largely empty. With her key card, she buzzed herself into the building. Her footsteps echoed as she ascended the stairwell. Each floor was marked. She stopped at number five, and pushed the door open. The floor was quiet, just like in her dream.

Chapter One
Scotland, June 1557

Water swirled around in a torrent, sucking him under the vast currents. His arms flailed helplessly, attempting to grasp a rock, a limb, or anything available, only to have it ripped away. The noise of the rushing water confused him and severed his mental hold on his location. Tossed about by the raging water, he managed to surface long enough to catch a breath and notice a large boulder looming ahead. But it was too late to react. His ribs slapped the rock’s flat face and the wind was knocked from his weakened form.

So this was the end, to die by drowning so close to his destination. How had everything gone awry?

****

Several days earlier…

Bryce Cameron couldn’t be happier. Behind him, nestled amongst jagged rocks and trees, rested the Sinclair keep and his past. Before him awaited beautiful grasslands, with free-‐‑roaming sheep and his future.

Leaving Grant behind had been a kind of necessary torture. His cousin needed to sever ties, whereas Bryce needed freedom to travel. The call to home beckoned. Who knew what would happen if he waited any longer?

For the arduous journey ahead, Duncan, the Sinclair laird, had given him a horse and a sword. Arbella, the laird’s wife, had supplied him with food and blankets. With gladness, he’d accepted the gifts. Without a worry, Bryce set out for home. His woman awaited.

Crissy, a red-‐‑haired lass, short and round, full in bosom and hip, had a twinkle in her eye which constantly hinted at mirth.

Temper was her middle name as she took pleasure in exhibiting it most of the time. But instead of deterring Bryce, it only endeared her to him. With his mild-‐‑mannered, laid-‐‑back ways, having a forceful woman seemed necessary. Besides, when her temper flared, her adorable dimples showed, and he couldn’t get enough of them.

Thoughts of Crissy sent his feet knocking the sides of his horse, urging the beast into increased speed. The animal cantered by a field dotted with white sheep lazily plucking at the ground, chewing in a slow rhythmic motion. As he sucked in the fresh air, he also smelled the odor of wet wool and the bleating of ewes. With it came the desire to arrive home more quickly.

Daydreams of a field full of sheep and a house full of children floated through his mind. Crissy would be in the middle of both. Strong, secure, and fierce, his soon-‐‑to-‐‑be wife would be a force to be reckoned with.

A smile tugged at his lips, a laugh escaped. The trail suddenly grew quiet and daunting in the afternoon sun. Since his journey had begun, there had been no traffic. An unnerving silence pervaded the area. The sooner he arrived on Cameron lands, the better he would feel.

The miles sped by. Nothing was prettier than the Scottish countryside. Forests, fields of flowers, and inhabited and uninhabited keeps dotted the landscape. Bryce avoided stopping in civilized areas, which would lead him off course. Without any delays, the road would have him home in a week’s time.

At night, Bryce slept under the stars. The weather stayed clear and warm, cooperating with his journey. He gave thanks to the Almighty for his uneventful passage.

After several days of travel, the end neared. The smell of sheep excrement increased. Within a day, he would arrive home and into the waiting arms of his betrothed. All the ways he might be greeted by his love entered his mind. Perhaps she would run out of her home and throw her arms around his neck, even going so far as to flatten a chaste kiss upon his cheek. Or maybe Crissy would set up a fuss about the length of his absence, in which case he would smile and agree, enjoying the sight of her anger thus presented.

A faint wind blew. The odor of his unwashed body sent his nose crinkling upward. Perhaps a bath was in order before meeting his beloved.

Bryce knew a river ran near Cameron lands. It would take no time to stop and bathe before going to meet his love. In fact, Crissy might be more affectionate if he removed the stink. The thought of increased affection hurried him along.

A path through the foliage opened to the river. Dismounting, Bryce tied his horse to a thick branch. Tunic removed and laid over his arm and his trews still in place, he waded in. One step into the chill waters almost led to retreat. Only the desire to please Crissy kept him moving.

The water was now waist high. His teeth clacked together as he shivered with cold. Grasped by the moving water, his tunic fell from his shoulder and floated away. Exasperated, Bryce reached to grab the floating fabric. Each time his fingertips brushed the water-‐‑ logged cloth, the moving waters jerked it away before he could retrieve it.
Without thought, Bryce followed it further and further in. As he approached the middle of the river, his foot slipped. His feet flew out from under him and the water swept him underneath its surface, surprising Bryce with its fierceness.

Life flashed before his eyes. The brevity of time depressed him even as the water sucked him under once again. Thoughts rankled. A life ending without Crissy by his side, without having had his children, or raising his sheep, thoughts of dying over a stupid tunic.

White water rushed around and over him. When his head rose above the caps, he quickly sucked in a breath. Less and less Bryce came up for air as the water tumbled him head over heel, over and over. Death was close at hand. Now there was one more regret to add to his long list. No one would know what had happened to him.

His chest burned as his wet wool clothing dragged his body down one last time.

Flashback Friday

The Perfect Rose by Felicia Rogers

Abandoned by his wife and left to raise a child alone, Caleb Reed falls short of the ideal work-from-home dad. He needs a woman to help him, in every sense of the word. At the suggestion of a friend, Caleb agrees to hire Ariel Lauren on a trial basis.

As an orphan, Ariel has more issues than just how to make it on her own. Yes, she needs the money that Caleb offers her, but more than anything she finds she desires his love. One calamity after another befalls her and jeopardizes her new job and her chance at having a family. But through it all, Caleb is by her side, his gruff exterior threatening to melt in the face of their shared attraction. Will they decide to continue life alone or will the magic of Valentine's Day bring them together?

Chapter One

She should be here any moment. Mabel had said ten o’clock
and assured Caleb the lady was never late. Now here he sat, sipping
hot coffee and watching Joshua make snow angels in the yard. His
mind relaxed and drifted to his earlier conversation with Mabel.

“You need help with that boy.”

“I know I do. But not just anyone will work. Joshua is
special.”

“Yes, Caleb. I know all about his intelligence. And the lady I
have in mind is perfect for him. Besides, she needs you as much as
you need her.”

“Tell me about her. Why would she be willing to work for
me?”

Since Kelly, his wife, had left him almost six years ago, Mabel
a nosy friend from church, had been hounding him to find a
housekeeper for his home. ‘A woman’s touch, that’s what it’s
missing’—was her favorite thing to say. Her intentions good, Mabel
was an old biddy to some but like a second mother to others.

When Mabel mentioned Ariel to him, Caleb knew she had his
best interest at heart. She explained that Ariel worked with children
in the church nursery and that she was different. When he pushed
for more information, Mabel would only say it would be good for
Ariel to be around Joshua during his birthday.

Now he waited, in the freezing cold, on a woman he’d never
seen and knew nothing about. Caleb Reed, ex-fitness trainer, turned
writer was going to depend on a stranger to clean his home, cook
meals, and care for his child. All the things Kelly should have done.
But he wasn’t going down that road again.

Caleb sighed as depression threatened to hit again when
Joshua ran toward him with a huge grin. He fell into Caleb’s lap,
hugged him, and galloped off inside.

The door banged shut and Caleb heard a car pulling into the
driveway. Looking toward the driveway he realized, he’d formed
assumptions about Ariel based on Mabel’s descriptions and they’d
all been wrong. He’d thought she was sending him a little old lady,
or perhaps a Mary Poppins character. But his expectations hadn’t
been the girl stepping out of the small sedan.

First of all, Ariel looked to be around twenty-five and around
five foot seven in height with a slender frame. Light brown hair
cascaded down her back in soft waves. She wore jeans and a sweat
shirt that read, “Bona Fide Jesus Freak”. Her hands were stuffed in
her pockets, as she approached the porch. A smile spread evenly
across her face. When her sunglasses were removed, he saw a
sparkle of emerald green eyes.

Whistling low under his breath, he stood. Caleb was going to
have to have a talk with Mabel. Was she trying to find him a
housekeeper or a model? This young, wisp of a thing reminded him
of a rare specimen, a rose in a garden that begged for a passerby to
stop and smell it. With her beauty, the party scene was probably
more her thing. There was no way this girl was going to want to stay
at home and just play house.

Holding out her hand, she spoke, “Hello. My name is Ariel
Lauren. Mabel sent me.”

Caleb felt goose bumps tingle down his spine at the sound of
her voice.

Ariel held an air of authority in her squared shoulders. She
gazed at him, with a smile on her lips. Confidence exuded from her
tone, but when Caleb looked deeper into the green depths of her
eyes, he thought he saw a hidden sadness.

A sudden urge to delve into her feelings and decipher what
had caused such a look on her youthful face overcame him, but
instead Caleb offered his hand in a formal greeting, enveloping her
small, soft hand in his larger one. “Hello. I’m Caleb Reed. It’s nice
to meet you. Mabel’s told me a lot about you.”

“It’s nice to meet you as well, Mr. Reed. I hope everything
Mabel said was good.”

“Of course it was. You know Mabel. Oh, please call me Caleb.
Mr. Reed makes me seem so old,” he answered, with a light hearted
smile.

“Okay,” she said, shyness overcoming her.

The feeling of camaraderie passed and silence descended.
Caleb was on the verge of talking, when she spoke again, “Mabel
told me you needed someone to help around the house and to watch
your son for a few months?”

“I do.”

“How much do you pay?”

Direct and to the point, that was good. “I’ve taken the liberty
of writing down a figure.” Caleb handed her a slip of paper. Ariel’s
eyes rounded as her jaw went slack. He wasn’t sure from her
reaction if she thought it was too little or too much. “Is there a
problem with the figure?”

“No, no problem,” she stuttered, still glancing down at the
numbers. “When can I start?” she said, stiffening her spine and
adjusting her purse on her shoulder.

“Well, I thought I might take a few days to check your
references, if you don’t mind.”

“No, of course not. I understand.”

“Do you have a resume?”

“A resume?”

Judging from her frown, he figured the answer was no. “Yes.
Do you have a list of your previous places of employment? Is there
anyone who can vouch for you and your skills?”

Ariel’s head fell, her eyes facing downward. She looked
around at the neighborhood, her brows furrowed as lines of worry
appeared upon her face. After a few moments, she lifted her head
with renewed optimism and smiled. “I don’t have a resume
prepared. I’m sorry. I had the impression from Mabel this was more
of an informal position. But what about a trial run? I’ll work free for
a week. If you’re unsatisfied, then you can release me, no questions
asked.”

Caleb’s first instinct was to flat out refuse her offer, but
something about her called to him. What was her story? There was
no denying it; there was a story. Mabel was a sneaky one, no doubt
about it. And she had a reason for recommending Ariel. Caleb hated
to admit it, but he was curious.

He found himself agreeing to her terms. He nodded. “One
week.”

“One week,” she agreed.
